Harris Corporation Chairman, President and CEO Howard L. Lance has been inducted into the Bradley University Centurion Society for Distinguished Alumni. Lance is a 1977 graduate of Bradley, a private university located in Peoria, Illinois.

Founded in 1982, the Centurion Society honors alumni who have become national or international leaders in their field, and recognizes them for achievements in business, public life, and their professions. Lance was among five alumni recognized during the school’s Founder’s Day Convocation held last week.

Lance was born in East Peoria, Illinois, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering from Bradley University. He began his career at Caterpillar, Inc., which is headquartered in Peoria, in their engineering co-op program. In 1988, Lance earned a Master of Science degree in management from the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University.

In the university’s announcement of the Centurion Society selections, it noted that Lance was the youngest and only the 8th CEO in Harris Corporation’s 108-year history when he joined the company in 2003. Before joining Harris, Lance was President of NCR Corporation and Chief Operating Officer of its Retail and Financial Group. Previously, he spent 17 years with Emerson Electric Company.

Among other Lance awards and recognitions cited by the university was the appointment of Lance by President George W. Bush to the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee in 2006 and his service as Chairman, Board of Directors, United Way of Brevard County (Florida). Lance was voted 2006 Best Chairman in the American Business Awards competition and was named the 2005 Technology Executive of the Year in Florida by the American Electronics Association. He received the 2006 Citizen of the Year Award by Florida Today newspaper for his work with area charities and universities in central Florida.
