Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that SK Telecom, the leading provider of information and telecom services in Korea, is upgrading its optical backbone to support increased traffic from mobile data services in Korea. Alcatel-Lucent has rolled out its optical cross-connect technology to help SK Telecom support the increasing bandwidth needs driven by the expansion of its 3G W-CDMA and WiBro service offerings while delivering enhanced mobile traffic backhaul capabilities early October.

To assist SK Telecom in further strengthening the notable success that these services are gaining, Alcatel-Lucent has deployed its 1678 Metro Core Connect (MCC). The scalability and advanced protection capabilities offered by this solution enables SK Telecom to support increasing market demands with enhanced network efficiency. Furthermore, the enhanced mobile traffic capabilities offered by the Alcatel-Lucent 1678 help SK Telecom maximize its Quality of Service (QoS) for the highest end-user experience possible.

“This new achievement builds on the long-lasting and successful cooperation with SK Telecom in paving the way for new services,” said Frederic Rose, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s Asia Pacific activities. “We are committed to assist our customers like SK Telecom to lead the era of fixed-mobile convergence as data and transport worlds move closer.”

Designed for metro and core applications, the Alcatel-Lucent 1678 MCC integrates data and transport functionality into a single node, thus optimizing network investments. Simplifying network operations, the Alcatel-Lucent 1678 MCC offers a solution to fixed and mobile operators who want to aggregate and consolidate multi-protocol traffic streams from the metro towards the core.

This contract further strengthens Alcatel-Lucent’s momentum in the optical cross connect segment both worldwide and locally. KT, Hanaro Telecom, China Telecom and Telefonica are just some of the operators who have chosen or deployed our optical cross-connect solutions.
