Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q) today announced it has signed an agreement with Seattle-based Airbiquity Inc. Airbiquity develops wireless in-band modem software solutions for automotive manufacturers and suppliers, personal navigation device (PND) manufacturers and fleet management companies.

Airbiquity is using the state-of-the-art telecom and data communications infrastructure of Qwest’s CyberCenters in Seattle and Sterling, VA, to commercially launch its VIAaqTM solution, a turnkey managed telematics and telemetry data service offering.

VIAaq provides scalable and feature-rich data connectivity between telematics service providers and a vehicle or portable navigation device (PND) for a relatively low cost of entry. VIAaq delivers data using Airbiquity’s patented data over voice technology, as well as existing Short Message Service (SMS) and packet data transport mediums. By using VIAaq, automotive manufacturers and PND suppliers eliminate the operations and maintenance costs associated with hosting or managing their own data center.

Qwest’s high availability co-location facilities enable VIAaq to provide a load-balanced and geographically redundant system to handle critical business operations.

“Airbiquity selected Qwest for their high security, 24-hour monitoring services that are designed to ensure carrier grade reliability for our operations and equipment,” said Leon Hong, chief technology officer for Airbiquity. “We are excited to be working with this industry leading provider to offer exceptional telematics services to our customers.”

“Airbiquity’s business is about delivering innovative and technologically advanced services for customers,” said Tom Richards, executive vice president, Qwest business markets group. “When they needed a nimble and national-scale communications provider, the Qwest account team was excited to step forward and offer a strategic piece of Airbiquity’s unique service offering.”

Qwest opened its world-class CyberCenter in the Seattle area in February 2007 to provide secure, reliable and scaleable hosting services to businesses. Qwest CyberCenters provide expert support for customers to conduct e-commerce, operate complex Web sites, offer geographical redundancy, and manage entire IT environments including enterprise applications, databases and data storage.

Qwest’s business market group serves hundreds of thousands of business and federal, state and government customers coast-to-coast with a full suite of data, Internet and voice products that run over Qwest’s nationwide fiber-optic MPLS network. Qwest’s innovative technologies, combined with its award-winning customer service, make it one of the nation’s top-tier business and government communications providers.
