Wireless Medical Content Helps Nurse Practitioners Make Critical Decisions

Thomson Micromedex gives mobileMICROMEDEX™ to ACNP nurse practitioners under new partnership.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif., 10/21/2005

ACNP NATIONAL CLINCIAL CONFERENCE--As part of their joint commitment to serve the specialized technology needs of the nursing community, Thomson Micromedex and the American College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP) have entered into a partnership to give members complimentary access to evidence-based clinical information via handheld technology to support care treatment decisions. Micromedex is a part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC), a leader in enterprise-wide clinical knowledge solutions for scientific and healthcare professionals.

According to Kenneth P. Miller, Ph.D., R.N., C.F.N.P., F.A.A.N., president-elect of ACNP, nurse practitioners oftentimes travel to rural areas where they have limited or no access to their computers. “To deliver the highest quality care, nursing professionals must have proven and unbiased medical data empowering them to make accurate care decisions wherever they practice,” he said. “With the aid of mobileMICROMEDEX™, nurse practitioners can easily access trusted and consistent evidence-based clinical information at the patient’s bedside and throughout the patient care process.”

Through the agreement, the two organizations will give nurse practitioners access to Micromedex clinical solutions suite using mobileMICROMEDEX, a software tool that seamlessly downloads medical information on drugs, drug interactions, diagnosis, acute care, alternative medicines and toxicology to their Palm OS® or Pocket PC PDA (personal device assistant). Additionally, nurse practitioners receive the “What’s New” alert that automatically notifies clinicians of the lasted drug information including FDA updates.

“Having this timely data supported through the flexibility of PDAs benefits all nurse practitioners striving to increase their productivity and quality time with patients,” added Miller. “For example, a nurse practitioner with mobile access can perform automated checks for drug-drug interactions before prescribing medication while continuing to provide direct patient care, without any change to their workflow.”

“Thomson Micromedex is pleased to provide these dedicated ACNP professionals with easy access to our evidence-based clinical decision support solutions to assist them in making diagnosis and treatment decisions at the point of care,” said Jay Katzen, vice president of marketing and product development, Thomson Micromedex. “We believe nurse practitioners are essential to front-line care giving and design solutions to strengthen their practices of delivering optimum patient care whenever and wherever they need it.”

During the ACNP Conference, Micromedex Product Manager Becky Allen will present “Clinical Tools in Practice” 2-3 p.m. on Oct. 22 as part of the show’s “Emerging Practice” educational session. Allen will discuss how wireless tools such as mobileMICROMEDEX help nurse practitioners make informed patient care decisions while supporting improved outcomes. Additionally, she will talk about the different clinical content resources available for the PDA and how nurses can incorporate them into their workflow to find answers quickly to clinical questions, even when away from their computer.
