UPMC Wins Honors for Quality from Leapfrog Group and National Research Corp.

UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside, part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), has been honored for quality and safety achievements by two nationally recognized organizations.

UPMC Presbyterian has been named among 33 hospitals on the 2007 Leapfrog Top Hospitals list. In addition, UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside has been named a 2007/2008 Consumer Choice Award winner by National Research Corp. (NRC), based on consumer survey results on the quality and image of a hospital.

“These national honors highlight the ongoing commitment of our doctors, nurses and staff at UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside to provide patients with innovative, high-quality health care,” said Elizabeth Concordia, president, UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside, and senior vice president, academic and community hospitals. “It is our mission to transform health care so that all patients receive the right care at the right time in the right way.”

Leapfrog’s featured hospitals received top scores on a rating system that measured 1,285 hospitals’ efforts to optimize patient safety standards, treat high-risk diseases according to scientific evidence and use electronic prescribing programs. The Leapfrog Group is a consortium of corporations and other organizations that work to improve the quality, safety and affordability of health care.

UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside was named a Consumer Choice Award winner by NRC again this year for the eighth year in a row. It was the only hospital in the Pittsburgh area named this year. NRC chose UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside based on the results of its annual Healthcare Market Guide study, which asks more than 200,000 consumers which hospitals have the best overall quality and image.
