The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded $12,000 to South Texas Colonia Initiative (STCI) to teach residents about important environmental health concepts so that they can better avoid risks and improve their health. STCI will partner with volunteers who conduct health fairs for colonia residents on a quarterly basis. STCI will hire and train promotoras (lay health trainers) to help educate residents on the dangers of lead, contaminated water, and uncontrolled pesticide usage.
