Literacy Champion Reads Famous Works Including ‘The Raven,’ ‘The Gettysburg Address’ and ‘Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus’

Oct. 18, 2005, NEW YORK – To celebrate its 10th birthday and show appreciation for the consumers who have made Verizon SuperPages.com the most advanced Internet yellow pages in the country, the company is presenting a series of classic readings titled “Listen to This with James Earl Jones.”

Visitors to SuperPages.com www.superpages.com) can listen to Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven,” an all-time Halloween favorite. In November, the featured selection is Jones’ powerful rendition of “The Gettysburg Address” by Abraham Lincoln, the president who declared Thanksgiving a national holiday. In December, visitors to SuperPages.com can hear the famous New York Sun editorial “Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus.” Each new selection will be added to those already available on the site.

Scripts for each streaming audio presentation are posted on the site so visitors may read along as they listen. There is also a glossary to help understand the words Poe used in “The Raven.”

Verizon SuperPages.com began 10 years ago as one of the first Internet yellow pages providers. The site has evolved over the past decade into the nation’s most advanced online yellow pages, complete with shopping comparisons, coupons, maps and more than 18 million national and local listings.

“In just one decade, SuperPages.com has become an indispensable local search destination,” said Eric Chandler, president of the Internet Division of Verizon Information Services. “We know around here, and that is why we have been successful in building the tools that consumers need to find information quickly and efficiently.”

Jones appears frequently on behalf of Verizon’s literacy initiatives and believes strongly in the power and joy of reading. He is well known for his stage and film roles as well as voice work in notable projects including “The Lion King” (Mufasa) and “Star Wars” (Darth Vader), and performances in “The Great White Hope,” “Fences,” and, most recently, “On Golden Pond” at The Kennedy Center.

“There is tremendous power in the printed word,” Jones said. “I enjoy demonstrating that power by bringing these words to life by voicing them and making them available to people everywhere.”

Our culture is based on the beliefs, traditions, messages and stories that we share, Chandler said. “This poetry and prose represent the fabric of who we are,” he said. “We celebrate our 10th birthday by bringing these classic readings to young and old via SuperPages.com
