Telenor selects Alcatel-Lucent for advanced broadband access solutions: GPON fiber-to-the-home and VDSL2
Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that Telenor, Norway’s leading service provider, has selected Alcatel-Lucent as a preferred supplier for advanced broadband access solutions, encompassing fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) as well as fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) and VDSL2. Alcatel-Lucent’s solutions will enable Telenor to offer advanced broadband services such as high-definition television (HDTV), IPTV, video on demand (VoD) and high-speed Internet access. It will allow the operator to cost-effectively transform its access network - in line with Telenor’s “all-IP” strategy. Initial deployments are expected by the end of 2007 in Norway, and will be extended later to other Telenor affiliates.
In this fiber migration project, Telenor will be rolling out gigabit passive optical network (GPON) FTTH in greenfield deployments and elsewhere where appropriate, and FTTN with VDSL2 technology in other areas which will enable them to offer advanced broadband services.
“Since 2000, Alcatel-Lucent has been Telenor’s main supplier of access solutions, including DSL, and we look forward to now supporting their fiber-to-the-home projects,” said Christian Reinaudo, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities for Europe and North. “Telenor’s selection of our GPON technology further confirms Alcatel-Lucent’s global leadership in high-bandwidth IP access platforms, and strengthens our position in the Nordics market.”
As part of the contracts, Telenor will deploy the ISAM (Intelligent Services Access manager) family, including the Alcatel-Lucent 7342 ISAM FTTU, the 7302 ISAM and the 7330 ISAM FTTN. The 7342 ISAM FTTU is the market’s first platform that complies with the GPON recommendations of the Full Service Access Network (FSAN) group. All products will be managed by the Alcatel-Lucent Access Management System, the converged access element manager that covers the full ISAM portfolio and provides comprehensive management capabilities.
Alcatel-Lucent remains the uncontested market leader in broadband access with more than 142 million DSL lines shipped to date, and a cumulative DSL market share of 41%, more than three times that of its nearest competitor. More than 165 customers, including all major services providers in the Nordics, have adopted the ISAM product family – the industry’s first true high-end IP access platform that accommodates a wide range of network flavors and topologies. Alcatel-Lucent is engaged in more than 65 FTTx projects around the world, more than 35 of which are with GPON.
