Christen Brownlee Joins News And Communications Staff At Johns Hopkins Medicine

Christen Brownlee, who holds a master’s degree in science and environmental reporting, has joined the staff at Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Division of Media Relations and Public Affairs as a senior media relations representative. Brownlee, who has nearly a decade of experience as a science writer, author, editor and media relations professional, most recently served as an editor of a startup science and social studies magazine for middle school students published by National Geographic.

Brownlee’s responsibilities at Hopkins include coverage of allergies, clinical immunology, asthma, biotechnology, endocrinology, diabetes, general internal medicine, geriatrics and gerontology, Gyn/Ob, reproductive endocrinology, health care policy, hematology, neurology and urology.

Before her job at National Geographic, Brownlee was a reporter for the weekly newsmagazine, Science News, where she wrote about basic biology. During her time there, she covered a variety of topics in cellular and molecular biology, ranging from the utility of stem cells to the search for extraterrestrial life. Brownlee gained experience in media relations at the scientific journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, where she wrote the weekly tip sheet. She has written numerous freelance publications, including articles for popular press magazines, scientific journals, health Web sites and children’s classroom magazines. Her first children’s book will be published this September.

Brownlee, whose hometown is Chester, VA., is currently living in Catonsville, Md. She earned her undergraduate degree at Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, Va., and her master’s degree at New York University.
