Lattelecom to deploy Alcatel-Lucent’s microwave solution to extend broadband DSL services to Latvia’s rural areas

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced a three-year framework agreement with Lattelecom, a consortium comprising Telia Sonera and the Latvian State, to extend its broadband DSL (digital subscriber line) services to Latvia’s rural areas using Alcatel-Lucent’s microwave solution. This will enable the operator to expand its subscriber base by offering advanced broadband services to people in previously un-served, remote areas, significantly enhancing communications services in the country.

Under the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will supply its 9500 Microwave Cross Connect(MXC) microwave solution to aggregate and transport DSL broadband network traffic, and also provide installation and commissioning services. DSL enables much faster connections over existing copper wire.

“This solution will allow us to develop broadband services in those parts of Latvia where optic cable infrastructure is not yet available. The Alcatel-Lucent microwave solution has the highest possible capacity, and it will allow us to keep our commitment to our clients by offering high-quality broadband connections,” says Lattelecom network director Valdis Vancovics. “Alcatel-Lucent’s reliable and scalable microwave solution and secure architectures have provided a dynamic technological response to our needs to expand DSL coverage in rural areas.”

This agreement with Lattelecom enhances Alcatel-Lucent’s presence as a key supplier of microwave solutions and data transmission equipment in the Baltic region.

“Lattelecom is the first incumbent fixed operator offering broadband communication services in Latvia. It is rewarding to help a pioneer such as Lattelecom bring broadband DSL services to remote areas where these types of services previously were not available,” said Philippe Dumont, president of wireless transmissionactivities for Alcatel-Lucent. “Skillful management of data transmissions supports the operational efficiency and competitiveness of our customers. The Alcatel-Lucent 9500 MXC solution will enable Lattelecom to develop its network to accommodate growing levels of traffic according to its business needs, while minimizing capital and operating costs, and reducing complexity and management requirements.”

With a flexible architecture ready to transport IP and TDM services, the Alcatel-Lucent 9500 MXC solution provides a smooth migration from legacy networks, leveraging operators’ existing infrastructure investments at lower cost and delivering the superior service quality they require.

Introduced to the market last year, the Alcatel-Lucent 9500 MXC solution is a digital, medium-to-high capacity, point-to-point microwave radio solution that supports PDH, SDH/SONET, Ethernet interfaces and node configurations. It provides an effective solution for high-capacity applications addressing the transmission needs of public and private telecommunication networks.

Alcatel-Lucent is the world’s leading manufacturer of microwave transmission equipment, with more than half a million microwave radios delivered worldwide to more than 150 customers in 120 countries.
