The University of California, Irvine garnered $276 million in contract and grant funding for the fiscal year ending June 30, continuing a strong upward trend in support for research, education and public service projects.

“We are very pleased to see our UC Irvine investigators achieving such success in this fiercely competitive environment,” said Susan V. Bryant, vice chancellor for research. “These awards support a broad base of exciting and innovative programs across the campus and reflect our investments in faculty and facilities. The stability of our funding demonstrates the dynamic nature and long-term viability of our research programs.”

Although dropping slightly below last year, when a single $19.7 million award boosted the total, this year’s funding included more than $197 million from federal sponsors for projects including research, clinical trials, training and fellowships. Funding from the U.S. Departments of Defense and Education and the National Endowment for the Humanities increased by a cumulative 52 percent.

Awards from private, non-profit foundations totaled $36 million; industry awards totaled $20.6 million. The UC Discovery grant program, which pairs state investment with private industry, generated more than $13 million for cooperative research projects.

UCI also was awarded more than $17 million in funding from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, ranking fourth in the state in total CIRM awards for stem cell research. However, only $2.1 million of this funding had been received by June 30; the remainder will be counted in subsequent years.

This year’s total also includes 28 individual awards of more than $1 million and 59 faculty members received more than $1 million each in total awards. For additional information, visit www.rgs.uci.edu/ora/sp/reports. For news and feature stories on faculty projects, visit www.today.uci.edu.
