Support for XSLT and XML Schema Advances XML Authoring While New Migration Guide and Templates Ease Transition to Structured Content

SAN JOSE, CA — Sept. 12, 2005 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced Adobe® FrameMaker® 7.2, the latest version of its enterprise-class authoring and publishing software. Adobe FrameMaker, a tool for creating complex documents such as lengthy technical manuals and catalogs, bridges the gap between simple word processing and XML (Extensible Markup Language) authoring and publishing. Unlike word processing software alone, FrameMaker 7.2 allows users to output directly to multiple channels, including print, PDF, HTML and XML.

“FrameMaker 7.2 delivers the features customers have been requesting most and extends Adobe’s market-leading integration of XML across its publishing and design product lines,” said John Brennan, senior vice president of Corporate Development at Adobe. “FrameMaker software’s advanced capabilities enable forward-looking enterprises — in high-tech industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, semiconductors and information technology — to leverage the power of XML and produce compelling print, web and PDF content.”
Simplify the Switch to Structured Documents and XML

Adobe FrameMaker 7.2 makes it easy to migrate from unstructured to structured documents. Companies that structure documents can repurpose content with little effort, reducing the time and expense of initiating new projects, while enabling information to be delivered in new interactive or personalized ways. FrameMaker 7.2 software’s Unstructured to Structured Migration Guide details the considerations and the steps required to adopt a XML workflow. The built-in conversion tools that give structure to documents now retain character and paragraph styles, which speeds the conversion process. The familiar WYSIWYG interface in Adobe FrameMaker also makes authoring and editing XML more approachable than other systems.

New structured templates give authors an instant starting point for documents. Templates include a sample application of Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA), a XML-based architecture for authoring and delivering content, which organizes and integrates technical information.

“The XML Schema support in Adobe FrameMaker 7.2 software is an excellent addition because we often have data arriving from multiple sources,” said Max Dunn, president at Silicon Publishing. “Now we don’t have to worry whether we have to work with XML defined with DTDs or XML Schema, as FrameMaker supports both.”
More Efficient, Productive Publishing

FrameMaker 7.2 adds XML Schema to the range of standards it supports. XML Schema is a Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) standard for describing the structure of a document and is an alternative to another standard that FrameMaker supports -- Document Type Definitions (DTDs). Users gain greater flexibility with new support for XSL Transformations (XSLT), which provides powerful options when automating and integrating into a XML workflow. Authors can use the new Multiple Undo feature to reverse edits such as Change Font and Import File. The History Palette lets authors view recent changes -- all in one spot -- and undo multiple edits with a single click.
