DISA’s Net-Centric Enterprise Services (NCES) Program to use Acrobat Connect Professional

SAN JOSE, Calif.— Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced that the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), an operating unit of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), plans to adopt Adobe® Acrobat® Connect™ Professional software to enable deployed troops, support personnel, and military leaders to collaborate more efficiently across locations worldwide. The multi-year NCES contract is valued at $22 million, and was awarded to Carahsoft Technology Corp., a government IT solutions provider that works in partnership with Adobe.

DISA is a combat support agency that plans, engineers, and maintains global net-centric solutions. It serves a diverse group of autonomously managed DoD enterprises, including the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Combatant Commands, and the nation’s military branches. As a result, DISA identifies and deploys interoperable systems that meet the highest standards for security, availability and quality.

“Acrobat Connect Professional will help simplify collaboration in the DoD’s complex, diverse environments,” said David Mendels, senior vice president, Enterprise and Developer Business Unit at Adobe. “In many operations, the real-time engagement enabled by Acrobat Connect may literally help save lives, as soldiers and military leaders share intelligence and plan strategies in response to changing conditions.”

DISA cited several factors for adopting this solution: including minimal IT expertise required for customizing and installing the software, nominal hardware requirements, streamlined maintenance, low-bandwidth capabilities, and VOIP handling. The solution only requires a Web browser and the Adobe Flash® Player—already installed on 98 percent of computers worldwide— for individuals to participate in Web conferences. Now, DoD organizations can overcome traditional barriers to collaboration due to personnel working on different computer systems and interacting via a wide range of T-1, satellite, and limited-bandwidth channels.

“Adobe’s Web collaboration software is widely used and trusted across the DoD. Its ease of use and tremendous user acceptance have been key factors in its success in distributed environments,” said Craig P. Abod, president of Carahsoft. “DoD users will benefit from a world-class solution that enables immediate communication, regardless of where they are located.”

In addition to deploying Acrobat Connect Professional for Web conferencing, DISA plans to implement the Jabber Extensible Communications Platform™ (Jabber XCP™) to provide DoD staff with XMPP-based, always-on instant messaging (IM) and chat to engage immediately with authorized personnel around the globe. The Adobe and Jabber solutions will be integrated via a Web interface that combines common tasks for Web conferencing and IM, as well as for fulfilling registration, authentication, and PKI requirements. Deployment and integration of the solution at DISA is expected to be handled by Science Applications International Corporation and SRA International, Inc.
