M. D. Anderson Receives Patient Safety Management Award

The National Patient Safety Foundation presented its second annual Stand Up for Patient Safety Management Award to The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in recognition of its Good Catch program.

A lively, baseball-themed competition, the Good Catch program promotes the use of M. D. Anderson’s Close Call Reporting System while acknowledging the critical role nurses play in the identifying and preventing of potential errors.

“Our goal was to change the culture of error reporting by substituting the commonly used terms ’near-miss’ and ’close call’ with ’good catch,’ ” says JoAnn Mick, associate director of nursing research. “By using the term ’good catch,’ we focus on the nurse’s intervention and hard work in catching the potential error rather than the potential error.”

Teams of in-patient nurses compete by divisions for prizes and a chance to play in the Good Catch League Series. At the end of the “season,” the Good Catch League commissioner announces the highest-scoring nursing unit as League Champions.

“Having a Close Call Reporting System has helped us recognize and prevent errors in medication order changes, equipment modifications and patient care processes,” says Barbara Summers, Ph.D., vice president for nursing practice and chief nursing officer. “The Good Catch program has helped us develop solutions so the potential error is not repeated in the future.”

The program not only creates a positive atmosphere for submitting and increasing awareness of potential errors, but also helps staff of all levels work together to make patient safety a priority.

“We’re honored that the Good Catch program is recognized as the best patient safety intervention program in the nation,” says Summers. “I’m excited to be a part of an initiative that helps M. D. Anderson provide an even safer, more caring environment for its patients.”
