The UPMC Center for Sports Medicine and Point Park University’s Summer in the City program are teaming up to offer a nutrition class designed just for teachers, no matter what subject they teach. The class, titled “Eat Right, Live Right: Secrets to Living and Teaching a Healthy Lifestyle,” will show teachers how to live healthy lifestyles while also promoting healthy living in their classrooms. Leslie Bonci, M.P.H., R.D., director of sports medicine nutrition at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine, will instruct the class at Point Park University from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, July 10.

“Eating well is key to feeling your best in and out of the classroom,” said Ms. Bonci, who also serves as a nutrition consultant for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates among other local and national organizations. “This class will teach you to feed your body right so that you can be your best and help your students to achieve their full potential as well.”

This interactive, three-hour nutrition class will show teachers how to improve their personal health and create a healthier classroom environment. Using her unique nutrition equation, Ms. Bonci will help participants identify the reasons behind their eating habits and create individual nutritional strategies that will actually work. Participants also will learn and sample quick and easy recipes, participate in non-strenuous physical activities and discover how to incorporate energy boosts and breaks into the classroom.

“The ‘Eat Right, Live Right’ class incorporates the goals of the Summer in the City program by taking a creative, holistic approach to learning,” said Hilda Pang Fu, executive director of Summer Programs at Point Park University. “Attendees leave with a road map not only for their own personal health and wellness, but also for their classroom or school.”

Teachers participating in the class will receive three credit hours toward Act 48 continuing education requirements. Tuition for the class is $99. For more information, or to register, please visit www.pointpark.edu/summer or call 412-338 CITY (2489). Space is limited.
