PFLAG Hails Historic California Marriage Vote; Calls on Governor to Sign

WASHINGTON, Sept. 7 -- Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) hails the courage and vision of the California State Legislature for affirming fairness and justice yesterday by adopting the religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act.

“As a parent and as a Californian, I am proud today” said PFLAG’s national president, Sam Thoron. “Reason and compassion have won out over ideology and bigotry. Our families have spoken and have finally been heard. I call upon Governor Schwarzenegger to come out on the right side of history now and sign this bill.”

While critics contend that marriage equality for same sex couples is harmful for families, they have no proof. All credible evidence, in fact, supports the position that extending civil marriage recognition to all couples who wish to accept the rights and responsibilities that come with it is good for families, good for children, good for communities, and harms no one.

“The institution of marriage stands to be strengthened and enhanced when committed same-sex couples take the solemn vow to be there for one another for better or worse, in sickness and in health” said Jody Huckaby, PFLAG’s executive director. “The tide is turning on this issue and Governor Schwarzenegger has an historic opportunity to be a part of it by taking a stand for love, commitment and personal responsibility. We encourage him to demonstrate the statesmanship and leadership this moment calls for and sign this bill into law.”

PFLAG member Louise Browning from Philo, California, witnessed both of her gay sons marry their life partners last year in San Francisco, only to see the marriages later rendered invalid. “I can’t find words to express how deeply moved I am right now. All any parent wants for their children is to grow and have the good fortune in life to find someone they want to build a life together with - and to be able to honor and celebrate that” said Browning. “I know there are still hurdles ahead, but for today I am filled with gratitude and joy.”
