Scanning the Movies returns to the halls of Hogwarts for two special episodes featuring the latest film based on J.K. Rowling’s novels, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix – part one airing July 6 at 8pm ET / 5pm PT and part two on July 13 at 8pm ET / 5pm PT. Scanning the Movies, an award-winning media education series showcasing the art and craft of filmmaking, examines a contemporary theatrical release and encourages viewers to see how the film impacts their lives. Internationally acclaimed media education expert, writer and teacher John Pungente, SJ is both creator and host of this thought-provoking series. Through his analysis of the film and interviews with key cast and creative team members, Pungente challenges the audience to watch carefully and think critically, while enjoying the movie.

“Not only have I read the books from day one, but I have been fortunate enough to interview the cast for each movie – and to watch how Harry, Hermione and Ron have grown over the last six years,” says Pungente. “The Harry Potter books and movies are classics, alongside the Oz novels, Lord of the Rings and Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials – they all create a richly imagined and utterly singular world, as detailed, as improbable and as mortal as our own.”

A summer has passed since Harry’s encounter with the Dark Lord, and Harry returns to learn that the wizarding community remains in denial about Voldemort’s return; the minister of magic believes that Headmaster Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) is lying; and a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher has been assigned. Now, with the entire wizard community in peril, the future of magic may depend on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

When the new professor, Dolores Umbridge’s (Imelda Staunton), Ministry-approved course of defensive magic leaves the young wizards woefully unprepared to protect themselves against the dark forces threatening them and the entire wizarding community, Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) urge Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) to act. Meeting secretly with a small group of students who name themselves “Dumbledore’s Army,” Harry teaches them how to defend themselves against the Dark Arts, working with a secret order of wizards calling themselves “The Order of the Phoenix” to prepare the courageous young wizards for the extraordinary battle that lies ahead.

Now in its tenth season, Scanning the Movies is a part of CHUM Television’s media education programming (www.chumlimited.com/mediaed).
