Animal Rescue Groups Begin Door-to-Door Searches for Missing New Orleans Pets

WHAT: Experts from the IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare - were granted permission from Louisiana authorities to begin assisting with emergency door-to- door searches of homes throughout the New Orleans area for pets that may have been left behind during the evacuation process, or separated from their owners during the hurricane.

Teams will identify rescue locations using a 138-page report of missing pets maintained by the Louisiana ASPCA and compiled by various organizations and agencies around the country that have collected data from concerned pet owners. (IFAW Missing Pet Database - .)

WHO: The IFAW team is headed by Shirley Minshew a veteran natural disaster rescue responder certified in rescue work, including water rescue. IFAW will be working directly with Code-3 Associates, and will operate from their 78-foot self-sufficient, mobile disaster response vehicle. This tractor-trailer unit accommodates 12 crew members, and has kitchen and shower facilities, 460 gallons of fresh water, water heater, and a vet triage and exam center equipped with a fold down stainless steel exam table, 12 cages, and veterinary supplies. The unit also includes a 4WD SUV, and motorboat for water rescues.

IFAW and Code-3 Associates will form part of a larger cooperating group of animal rescue groups working under the authority of Louisiana agencies (USDA, APHIS, Veterinary Services) with home searches permitted by the Louisiana State Police.

WHEN: Teams will disperse out to grid locations across the New Orleans area each morning at approximately 7pm and will leave the rescue areas before the 5:30 pm curfew.

WHERE: IFAW and Code-3 Associates are based with other animal rescue groups at the staging area set up at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, Louisiana - exit 177 off of I-10.
