Thomson announced the appointment of Richard Klasco, MD, FACEP to the newly created position of chief medical officer (CMO) of Thomson Healthcare. Thomson Healthcare is a part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) – a leader in information solutions for healthcare professionals.

As CMO, Dr. Klasco brings an important clinical perspective to Thomson Healthcare business decisions. Dr. Klasco will serve as the principal spokesperson on medical matters – presenting at various scientific and clinical meetings. His expertise will help Thomson Healthcare fulfill customers’ information needs and guide strategic and acquisition opportunities. Dr. Klasco will work with some of the industry’s brightest minds to establish new Thomson Healthcare advisory boards. These boards will help the company focus development efforts on products that reduce medication errors, improve clinical productivity, and improve patient care.

“This newly created position is another important step to continually stay on top of clinicians’ evolving needs,” said Kevin King, CEO of Thomson Healthcare. "I am confident Dr. Klasco will provide strategic guidance that strengthens our business and positions us for continued growth.”

Dr. Klasco is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. He trained in internal medicine at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and in emergency medicine at Denver General Hospital, where he was Chief Resident. He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and an author and reviewer of numerous peer-reviewed publications. Nationally recognized as an authority on patient safety, clinical decision support, and the drug development pipeline, Dr. Klasco has testified before Congress, served as the Grand Rounds Visiting Professor at Harvard, lectured at Stanford, the Mayo Clinic, and many others. In 2004, Colorado Governor Bill Owens appointed Dr. Klasco to the Colorado Poison Control Oversight Board. The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) also selected him as a member of their bioterrorism preparedness taskforce.

Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Klasco served as the Chief Medical Officer of Thomson Micromedex, provider of actionable information to assist clinicians in improving patient outcomes, enhancing medication safety, and streamlining disease management. Micromedex tools also meet the specific needs of professionals in environmental, health, and safety; managed care; and educational institutions.

In addition to Micromedex, Thomson Healthcare encompasses PDR; American Health Consultants; Physicians World; Gardiner-Caldwell, worldwide providers of continuing medical education; and Medstat, the standard for benchmark databases, decision support, and research services that aid employers and payers in managing healthcare costs and quality.

Dr. Klasco has been with Thomson Healthcare for eight years and served most recently as the chief medical officer for Thomson Micromedex. During that time, he developed relationships with leading institutions such as Harvard and Stanford, represented Thomson favorably at both state and national levels, and instilled genuine enthusiasm for lifelong learning among the medical editors.
