Motorola donates US $20,000 to create ACCP-Motorola Scholarship Fund

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) and the Motorola Foundation today announced a US $20,000 donation to the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP) to create the ACCP/Motorola Scholarship Fund. The announcement was made at the ACCP’s Annual Banquet, part of the ACCP’s General Meeting and Conference held this year in Nassau, Bahamas.

The ACCP/Motorola Scholarship Program will provide the necessary resources for sons and daughters of Police officers to continue their college or university studies. Through the promotion of this program, it is expected that students who do not have the available resources to continue their educations will now have the opportunity to do so.

“One of ACCP’s main objectives in the region is to take an active interest in the promotion of the development of young people regionally and internationally. To recruit students who can provide key resources to the success of policing and its critical needs for the future. In particular, we are interested in helping our youth achieve success and become productive members of society. The ACCP/ Motorola Scholarship Fund is a first step in helping us achieve that,” said Commissioner Paul Farquharson of the Bahamas, ACCP’s President.

According to Farquharson, the program will be targeted to students who wish to continue their education at a certified college or university either within the Caribbean region or colleges or universities that are associated with the member countries in the Caribbean like the United Kingdom, Canada or the United States.

Children of current police officers who experience financial hardship due to the death of a parent, inability of the parent to provide the necessary funding for the child’s academic pursuits, or other hardship will be able to use this money to continue their education in Engineering, Communications and Marketing, Finance, Industrial Engineering, Human Resource Management, Criminology, or Forensic Science.

“These disciplines are essential to the well-functioning of the day-to-day operations of police organizations and in which there is a need to continue training more professionals,” added Farquharson.

Since it was established in 1953, the Motorola Foundation has provided funding to higher education as well as a multitude of primary and secondary education programs assisting individuals to reach their greatest potential and to become lifelong learners. The ACCP and Motorola have worked together during the last six years to assist the police in each of the 24-member countries in the promotion and support of youth and community development programs. Since 2001, the ACCP and Motorola have hosted an annual Community Policing Award as a way to reward and recognize individuals, groups and organizations who have contributed significantly to the development and implementation of Community Policing Initiatives that seek to enhance police community relations and /or improve community life.
