Samsung SDI develops the world’s thinnest AMOLED

WEBWIRE

Long Beach, CA, May 22nd – the world ‘s leading display maker Samsung SDI Co., Ltd. announced Tuesday in SID 2007 that it had developed the world’s thinnest 2.2-inch Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diodes (AMOLED) display which is only 0.52mm thick.
The newly introduced 2.2inch QVGA(320 by 240) AMOLED can realize high-speed full-color(262K) video images, project images on brightness ratio ranging from 10,000 to 1 and has 100 percent color gamut.
Samsung SDI said its 0.52mm thinnest 2.2-inch AMOLED prototype is based on the conventional glass substrate, and the display uses low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) technology. It approaches the dimensions of a 1.7mm TFT-LCD considered to be the slimmest among the existing LCD modules available for mass production.
A 1.2-mm spare in thickness for a cell phone means that there are infinite ways to use the electric device by adding built-in functions such as Digital Multimedia Broadcast (DMB) and increase the battery capacity.
AMOLED is regarded as a promising display technology in that its response time is 1,000 times faster than of the existing TFT-LCD and its weight and thickness is 40% less compared with the existing displays.
Samsung SDI is completely ready now to mass produce the new AMOLEDs.
Samsung SDI expects to produce about 1.5million AMOLED modules per month for a wide range of handset displays.
The market research firm DisplaySearch predicts that the AMOLED market will grow dramatically to $2.8 billion in 2009 from $220 million in 2007. Samsung SDI also expects that the worldwide main panel AMOLED market will grow up to between 5 and 8 million units in 2007.
