LogistiCare Foundation Awards $60,000 in Grants to 20 NCIL Member Organizations in 8 States and D.C.

WEBWIRE

ATLANTA, Aug. 16 -- The LogistiCare Foundation Inc. announced today that it has awarded $60,000 in grant funds to 20 member organizations of the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL). Centers for Independent Living (CILs) and State Councils for Independent Living (SCILs) in eight states and the District of Columbia each received $3,000 grants to use for transportation programs.

Organizations were required to present a “problem statement” describing transportation needs of their clientele and a proposal explaining how they would use the funds. Awards were presented recently at the NCIL’s Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.

“It was great to see so many fine proposals submitted for consideration,” said Chanda Forsythe, program director of The LogistiCare Foundation. “It was a difficult decision for our board to select only 20 winners. Knowing that so many will be helped with their transportation needs and that we’ll also learn more about the mobility problems these individuals face in their communities is a rewarding feeling for me and our board members.”

“We told The LogistiCare Foundation when they first approached us that we were grateful for their interest in helping our members meet their transportation needs,” said John Lancaster, executive director of NCIL. “I was quite pleased to see how many of our member organizations took on the challenge of submitting a proposal. The challenge format was a very innovative concept and really made them think through how they would best make use of grant funds.”

Councils in the following states were eligible to apply for the grants: Missouri, Georgia, Virginia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida, Colorado, Maryland, Connecticut, California, Delaware, Oklahoma and Nevada.

The NCIL received an additional $3,000 for its part in helping to coordinate the grant applications among its member organizations. The LogistiCare Foundation will consider future grant funding based upon the findings from this demonstration year.
