Buena Vista Children’s Services “Discovery Connection” Helps Bridge Educational Gap In The Summer Months

Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q) through the Qwest Foundation has presented a $5,000 grant to Buena Vista Children’s Services in Cottonwood.

This is the second year the leading child advocacy agency in Yavapai County is receiving a grant to help fund its “Discovery Connection” program. With children out of school on summer break, this program allows children with special needs the opportunity to interact with other children further promoting development in both educational and behavioral skills.

“This helps with a very meaningful summer program that simply would not exist with out the generosity of well-intentioned companies like Qwest,” said Leslie Owen, executive director of Buena Vista Children’s Services.“ We are very grateful to be the recipient of Qwest’s generosity for two years now.”

The summer program is staffed by teachers from surrounding school districts who work throughout the year with special needs students. The program centers on the areas of science, math, language, computer technology, along with cognitive development and social skills.

Staff members of Qwest president Pat Quinn have personally toured the summer camp. “They have found it to be well run, with meaningful activities for all of the participants,” said Pat Quinn.
