One of the highlights of this year’s golf calendar gets underway today at the Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey the 87th championship of the Professional Golfers’ Association of America. Many golfers have secured their place in the sport’s history at the event, first played in 1916. Walter Hagen won the championship five times. The PGA championship draws the strongest field of contenders in the annual schedule of tournaments. Because of its nature, the event is not open to amateurs of which there are many, because of the game’s increasing popularity. In the U.S., more than 27-million people enjoy golfing each year a rise of more than 150 percent in less than two decades.
