Opel is expanding the charging options for its all-electric models: the battery-electric Opel Grandland variants have recently become the manufacturer’s first passenger cars to be available with a 22-kW on-board charger. This means that the Grandland Electric, Grandland Electric Long Range and the powerful Grandland Electric AWD now offer not only the option of recharging quickly at DC fast-charging stations, but also a particularly high-performance solution for AC charging. This means shorter charging times and greater flexibility when charging at home, at work or at public AC charging stations – provided that the relevant charging infrastructure supports the charging power required by the top-of-the-range SUV ‘made in Germany’.
“With the 22-kW on-board charger in the Opel Grandland Electric, we are underlining our commitment to making electric mobility even more convenient and flexible for our customers. As the first Opel passenger car to feature this charging option, the Grandland combines advanced charging technology with the qualities of a modern, all-electric SUV,” said Patrick Dinger, Head of Opel Germany.
The powerful 22-kW on-board charger makes it possible to make better use of the available charging power from suitable AC charging points. This significantly reduces charging times compared to a 11 kW charging rate – from around 5 hours to just over 2.5 hours 2 for the Grandland Electric and Grandland Electric AWD with a 78 kWh battery (73 kWh usable capacity), and for the Grandland Electric Long Range with a 100 kW battery (96.9 kWh usable capacity) by half, from 6.5 to 3.25 hours². This solution makes it even easier and more flexible for Grandland customers to integrate electric mobility into their everyday lives.
Ultimate ride comfort: Grandland Electric with Frequency Selective Damping
Once fully charged, Grandland Electric drivers can travel up to 519 kilometres; the Grandland Electric Long Range can even cover up to 691 kilometres (according to WLTP 3). Drivers and passengers enjoy the highest level of comfort on their journeys, thanks to – beyond several other features – the chassis with Frequency Selective Damping technology, which comes as standard on the all-electric Grandland variants. Depending on the situation, road surface conditions and driving style, the unique technology enables different damping characteristics for comfortable gliding at high frequencies – i.e. with short impacts such as on cobblestones – as well as for a sporty, ambitious driving style with more direct contact with the road at low frequencies. The Grandland Electric thus reacts even more immediately and directly to any command from the driver and, as is typical for Opel, remains stable when braking, cornering and at high speeds on the Autobahn.
The only model that offers an even more exhilarating drive is the Grandland Electric AWD. With this electric all-wheel-drive model, which boasts a total system output of 239 kW (325 hp) and was recently on display at the Paris Motor Show, as well as set to feature at Auto Zürich in the coming days, drivers have the choice of four driving modes: ‘Normal’, ‘Eco’, ‘Sport’ and ‘4WD’. While in ‘4WD’ both electric motors of the all-wheel drive vehicle run continuously and distribute the power evenly to all four wheels to ensure optimum grip – especially on slippery surfaces – in ‘Sport’, the steering and accelerator pedal respond even more directly thanks to a special setting. Peak power and torque are available in both modes. With up to 509 Newton metres, the latter ensures that the Grandland Electric AWD always gets off to a powerful and brisk start.
‘Electric All In’4: E-services included for affordable electromobility
And to give electric mobility a further boost, Opel is making it even easier and more attractive for customers – starting with the purchase of a vehicle. After all, anyone who buys a battery-electric car model such as the Opel Grandland Electric receives numerous services at the same time with ‘Electric All In’4. For example, services such as a Free2Move charging pass, e-routes functions and eight years of mobile charging and breakdown assistance as well as a battery warranty 5 are already included.
[1] A vehicle’s values not only depend on the vehicle’s efficient use of fuel, but are also influenced by driving behaviour and other non-technical factors.
[2] Charging power and charging time are influenced by several factors and may vary depending on, amongst other things, the type and power output of the charging station, the outside temperature, the battery temperature, the battery’s state of charge and condition, the vehicle’s equipment, and the vehicle’s settings.
[3] Range values determined according to WLTP test procedure methodology (R (EC) No. 715/2007, R (EU) No. 2017/1151). The actual range can vary under everyday conditions and depends on various factors, in particular on personal driving style, route characteristics, outside temperature, use of heating and air conditioning and thermal preconditioning.
[4] Offer for private customers when purchasing a fully electric passenger car from participating Opel partners in Germany by December 31, 2026.
[5] Eight years or 160,000 kilometres (whichever occurs first) of roadside and mobile charging assistance, as well as a battery warranty covering at least 70 per cent of the original charge capacity after this period or distance, in accordance with the warranty terms and conditions.
