- Siemens provided modern rail solutions, including electrification and signaling with ten years of maintenance, as well as communications and depot equipment.
- Pune Metro Line 3 halves travel time between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar, making daily commutes faster, more efficient, and reliable.
Siemens, together with TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited (a Tata Group company), and other partners, has successfully delivered Pune Metro Line 3, which commenced commercial passenger operations following its official inauguration. Prime Minister Modi personally inaugurated the project via a virtual live broadcast. This metro rail initiative was developed as Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model under India’s New Metro Rail Policy, which Siemens along with Tata provided capital support for. Siemens delivered a fully integrated turnkey solution, featuring its industry-leading Trainguard MT Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signaling system and complete electrification infrastructure. The Pune Metro project further included depot equipment, system integration, and comprehensive project management, backed by a 10-year full-service maintenance contract for the signaling and electrification systems. These innovations ensure intelligent, safe, and reliable operations, improving connectivity and reducing travel times by up to 50%.
“The inauguration of Pune Metro Line 3 marks a proud milestone for this prestigious turnkey project, and Siemens is honored to have partnered with the Tata Group to bring it to life. The new metro line will significantly enhance the quality of life for Pune’s citizens and transform their everyday journeys,” said Léon Soulier, Executive Vice President Turnkey Business at Siemens Mobility. “By combining our strong integration and project management capabilities with our advanced core technologies—such as our state-of-the-art CBTC system—we are enabling a reduction in travel time by nearly 50% for commuters. This delivers faster, safer, and more reliable connectivity across one of Pune’s busiest corridors, reflecting India’s strong commitment to sustainable and efficient public transportation solutions for its growing population.”
The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority awarded the concession to the Tata-Siemens JV to develop Metro Line 3, connecting Hinjewadi, Pune’s thriving IT hub, to Shivajinagar, a central mobility hub. The execution of the 23-kilometer elevated corridor features 23 stations, 1 depot, and 22 trains. The line is designed as a GoA2 (Grade of Automation 2) system, enabling semi-automated operations for enhance reliability and efficiency while maintaining the highest safety standards. Notably, the system is future-ready, with the flexibility to be upgraded to a fully automated GoA4 configuration.
Siemens, as part of the JV is delivering a wide range of advanced technologies. This includes its state-of-the-art Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system, Trainguard MT, which allows high-frequency operations, maximizes throughput, and ensures safe and efficient train movements. The advanced signaling technology supports real-time monitoring and automated train operation, further reducing headways and increasing overall reliability.
In addition to signaling, Siemens is providing a comprehensive package comprising electrification, telecom systems (data backbone, TETRA train radio, telephones, CCTV, and access control), a digital station manager, depot workshop equipment, and overall system integration. The 750V DC third-rail electrification system provides an efficient and reliable power supply across the corridor while minimizing the visual footprint of the infrastructure.
