Hydrogen Sulfide Exposure Hazards in Puerto Rico: What Workers, Employers, and Communities Need to Know
Zimmetry Environmental provides testing, consulting, and training services to help prevent exposure to hydrogen sulfide and other hazardous gases.
Reliable testing, monitoring, and employee training are essential for protecting workers and maintaining regulatory compliance throughout Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a highly toxic gas that can pose serious health and safety risks in workplaces and communities across Puerto Rico. While commonly recognized by its rotten egg odor, safety professionals warn that hydrogen sulfide can quickly become deadly, particularly in confined spaces and areas where organic materials decompose.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), hydrogen sulfide is one of the leading causes of workplace fatalities related to gas inhalation. The hazard is especially relevant in Puerto Rico, where tropical environmental conditions can contribute to dangerous gas accumulations.
Hydrogen sulfide is produced by the breakdown of organic matter and is commonly found in sewers, wastewater systems, manure storage areas, swamps, and other oxygen-deficient environments. It is also encountered in industries such as wastewater management, manufacturing, agriculture, energy production, food processing, and maritime operations. Because the gas is heavier than air, it can collect in tanks, pits, manholes, and other confined spaces, creating potentially life-threatening conditions.
Exposure can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, nausea, dizziness, and breathing difficulties. At higher concentrations, it can rapidly lead to unconsciousness, respiratory failure, and death. Adding to the danger, hydrogen sulfide can quickly impair a person’s sense of smell, eliminating its warning odor even when hazardous levels remain present.
To protect workers, OSHA and Puerto Rico OSHA (PR OSHA) regulations may require safeguards such as air monitoring, employee training, confined-space procedures, ventilation controls, emergency planning, and appropriate personal protective equipment. Air testing and continuous gas monitoring are among the most effective ways to identify hazardous conditions before they become emergencies.
“Hydrogen sulfide hazards can develop rapidly and without warning, particularly in confined spaces and wastewater environments,” said Harry Peña, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Reliable testing, monitoring, and employee training are essential for protecting workers and maintaining regulatory compliance throughout Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.”
To help raise awareness, Zimmetry Environmental recently sponsored an educational video explaining hydrogen sulfide hazards and practical ways to reduce workplace risks. It can be viewed at: https://youtu.be/1469C9i1OOY
