Eni publishes the 25th edition of the World Energy Review

A quarter century of energy system transformations charted through data

San Donato Milanese (Milan) – WEBWIRE –

The 25th edition of the World Energy Review (WER) is now available on eni.com.

With this new comprehensive edition covering 2025 data, Eni renews its commitment to providing a clear and practical perspective on global energy dynamics. First launched as a tool to analyse oil and gas markets, the World Energy Review has progressively evolved to reflect the profound transformations of the energy sector. Over the years, the publication has expanded its scope to include renewable energy, critical minerals, and cross-cutting indicators such as population, GDP, and CO₂ emissions, enabling a more integrated understanding of ongoing developments. For 25 years, the WER has served as a tool for analysing the evolution of energy markets, helping to understand the challenges and opportunities of a system that continues to evolve.

This year’s edition outlines an energy system undergoing profound transformation, shaped by the coexistence of different yet interconnected dynamics: growing energy demand, driven by the increasing role of artificial intelligence and data centers; the progressive development of renewable energy sources, marked by the growing importance of new technologies as well as increasing complexity involved in managing them ; and the still essential role of conventional energy sources in ensuring energy security, continuity, and affordability.

In detail, global energy demand reached around 15.7 Gtoe in 2025, growing by just over 1%, while the overall energy mix remained broadly stable, with oil, gas and coal continuing to account for around 80% of global primary energy consumption. Oil demand increased by 0.9 Mb/d, while global gas demand rose by 1.2%. The deployment of intermittent renewable energy sources continued at a strong pace, with global installed capacity increasing by 12% year-on-year and accounting for more than one-third of total worldwide power generation capacity. In this context, critical minerals are playing an increasingly important role, with overall production expanding in 2025, particularly for lithium (+29%) and graphite (+13%).

The analysis confirms that security, competitiveness, and environmental sustainability are interconnected objectives that should be pursued with an integrated approach, guided by pragmatism and technological neutrality.

The WER is Eni’s report on the global energy sector, also available in an interactive version, and a key reference for the energy industry. The publication is released in two stages: the first in July, providing an early insight into the key variables for the oil and gas sectors, as well as statistics on renewables and critical minerals; the second in October, offering a comprehensive breakdown of all variables.
