Blackmagic Design Announces Price Increases Due to Rising Memory Costs
New prices across a range of products as global demand for DRAM, flash and SSD storage continues to rise.
Blackmagic Design announced price increases on 36 products due to the rising cost of memory.
“These price increases are frustrating,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. "Over the past year the cost of memory, specifically the DRAM, flash and SSD storage that goes into almost everything we make, has risen several times over. The cause is memory manufacturers shifting their production to supply AI data centers.
"Our suppliers tell us memory consumption is now running 60% higher than it was at the peak of the COVID shortages, and even at that level they can’t keep up. They tell us that demand is running another 30% above what they can deliver. Put together, that means demand for memory is now about double what it was at the COVID peak.
"For a few years now we have been able to hold our prices down because we had already purchased the parts and could build from that parts stock, but that stock is now being replaced with parts bought at today’s higher prices. On the products that use a lot of memory the increase is more than we can absorb. That really shows up on the new SMPTE 2110 products, which use a lot more memory.
"So we need to adjust prices on the products most affected, but only by the minimum we need to.
“I am still not happy about this though. We are going to keep searching the open market for memory and other parts at better prices, and if we can find lower cost parts we will make sure to pass the savings on through special deals, as we’ve been doing recently. Hopefully we will get back to lowering prices as soon as parts prices come back down. We think they will.”
These updated prices only affect new orders, and all current customer backorders will be fulfilled at the original order price.
