Some cars mark an era and others manage to transcend it, while keeping their appeal intact. Alfa Romeo Giulia belongs to this second, very rare category, as recounted in the new book Alfa Romeo Giulia – Timeless Classic, launched on today’s opening day of Auto e Moto d’Epoca Bologna. One of the largest trade fairs in Europe focusing on passion for engines and the biggest in Italy, it is scheduled to continue until October 25. The launch took place at Alfa Romeo stand, during an engaging talk that witnessed the participation of Eugenio Franzetti – Global Director Marketing of Alfa Romeo, Lorenzo Ardizio – Curator of the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese and author of the new monograph, and Alessandro Maccolini – Alfa Romeo Design Project Manager.
Intertwining historical memory and direct testimonies, the three protagonists took the public on a journey through two generations of the Giulia, retracing the extraordinary sporting legacy of the ’60s sedan and revealing some of the background to the creation of its contemporary successor. Two different eras brought together by the same, unmistakable Alfa Romeo spirit, also reflected in the brand’s stand. The Alfa Romeo Classiche division uses it to celebrate the theme of the “sports sedan” with four iconic Biscione-brand cars, testaments to over 60 years of technical evolution, passion, and successes in racing.
Alfa Romeo Giulia – Timeless Classic opens with a foreword by Santo Ficili, Alfa Romeo and Maserati CEO, who emphasizes the profound emotional bond between the Giulia and enthusiasts: “For those who, like me, have had the privilege of experiencing Alfa Romeo up close, the Giulia represents something deeply personal. It’s one of those cars that manage to create an authentic emotional bond with their drivers, one with the ability to speak to the heart even before resorting to reasoning. The Giulia might be the contemporary epitome of the Alfa Romeo spirit: a car that continues to excite me every time I see it. A timeless automobile, one worthy of preservation, custodianship and being handed down for generations to come, from the very first moment.”
Alfa Romeo Giulia – Timeless Classic : the story of a contemporary legend
The tome traces the fascinating history of a car that has managed to bring the most authentic essence of the Biscione brand back into the focus of the international landscape. It takes up a legendary legacy and offers a reinterpretation through an uncompromising, modern vision of sportiness. The journey began long before the 2015 debut of the modern Giulia, sinking its roots into Alfa Romeo’s great history. From the legendary post-war sedans and the ’60s Giulia to the legend of the Quadrifoglio, the book reconstructs a heritage of ingenuity, courage and passion that spans generations, transforming each new challenge into an opportunity for reinvention. Just as ambitious a challenge has given rise to the Giulia of the new millennium: a project initially shrouded in secrecy, the upshot of Sergio Marchionne’s desire to return the brand to a truly leading role. Straddling visionary intuitions, unconventional choices and a group of designers called upon to make a start from a blank sheet of paper, a car destined to leave its mark has been brought to life.
Through direct testimonies, technical insights and an extraordinary collection of photographs, the book takes the reader behind the scenes of its creation: the design, mechanics, performance and that unparalleled driving pleasure become the pieces in the jigsaw of a story in which technology continuously encounters emotion. A special position is reserved for the Giulia Quadrifoglio – the most intense expression of this philosophy – and its most exclusive interpretations, including special versions and very limited editions such as the spectacular Giulia Quadrifoglio Luna Rossa. Masterpieces on four wheels, all together they make up a universe consisting of research, character, and the desire to stand out. Published by Giorgio Nada Editore and distributed by Giunti Editore, the 208-page tome includes bilingual text in Italian and English and is available during the Show at the Alfa Romeo and Giorgio Nada Editore/Libreria dell’Automobile stands. Enthusiasts will also have the opportunity to purchase the book at the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese, the Libreria dell’Automobile in Milan and in Giunti al Punto bookstores throughout Italy, or online at www.giorgionadaeditore.it and www.libreriadellautomobile.it, as well as on Amazon and the main online sales channels.
Four sports sedans embodying over 60 years of Alfa Romeo history
The same passion that enlivens the book’s pages takes shape on the Alfa Romeo stand: together with the Alfa Romeo Classiche division, the theme of the “sports sedan” is celebrated through four cars that testify to the technical and stylistic evolution of the Biscione brand, brought together by an intrinsic vocation for performance and driving pleasure. More specifically, it features three vintage models from the collection at the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese. Visitors can also find out more about the Alfa Romeo Classiche services dedicated to protecting and promoting the history of the iconic Italian brand, including Certificate of Origin, Certificate of Authenticity, and the Restoration service.
Kicking off the exhibition itinerary is the 1963 Giulia TI Super, the ‘ready-to-race’ version of the legendary Portello sports sedan, presented on April 24 that year at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza and produced in just 501 units. Featuring a lightweight body, the Quadrifoglio emblem and a 1.6-liter, 112-hp twin-cam engine, it represented the ideal starting point for the work of the tuners for the racetrack. A car that managed to bring out the extraordinary dynamic qualities of the Giulia by winning important class victories, including 1963’s prestigious “Tour de France – Auto.” The spotlight is also on the 75 Turbo Evoluzione (1987), 500 units of which were built to obtain homologation in Group A of the Turismo category, and to enable the brand to participate officially and with private teams in the 1987 World Touring Car Championship. Fitted with the legendary 1,762-cc turbo twin-cam, supercharged by a turbocharger and equipped with an intercooler, it adopted the refined transaxle architecture with De Dion tube suspension. Its exterior stands out for its multiple aerodynamic appendages, developed to improve performance on the track and meet homologation requirements.
The third Biscione-brand icon on display in Bologna is the 155 V6 TI “ITC” (1996), built for the International Touring Championship and a thorough evolution of the car that won the 1993 DTM with Nicola Larini. Its main new features included the adoption of a sophisticated 90° V6 engine, a solution designed to lower the center of gravity, with the ability to deliver 490 hp at almost 12,000 rpm. Introduced mid-season, the new engine helped return Alfa Romeo to the pinnacle of performance in the championship. Alongside, the Giulia Quadrifoglio Super Sport (2024), a contemporary expression of the same sporting tradition. Produced in only 275 units, the special series celebrates Alfa Romeo’s first victory at the Mille Miglia in 1928, taken by the legendary 6C 1500 Super Sport. It stands out for the unprecedented reinterpretation of the Quadrifoglio logo on a black background, a true innovation in the emblem’s history of over a century, and for the powerful 520-hp 2.9 V6 engine paired with mechanical self-locking differential. To enhance its exclusivity, carbon fiber details and interiors embellished with red 3D carbon finishes and the identification numbering of the limited series.
