EBU launches group to create shared live production tools
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has launched an open live production cloud group for its public service broadcasting members to build shared live production capabilities.
Chaired by Dennis Buhr, the group will reportedly be a community for EBU members to discuss, jointly build, and own shared live production capabilities based on open-source software and open standards.
The EBU described the aim of the group as follows: “To build the difficult, common parts once: the interfaces, integration layers, and management tools that every broadcaster needs but none benefits from building alone.”
It said each member would maintain control of its own editorial decisions, on-screen look, and rights.
The EBU explained that “shared” means shared work and shared foundations, not a fixed hosting model. Depending on what the collaboration shows, the components may be used in an EBU-hosted environment, a federation of interoperable member-hosted environments, or a hybrid with a few central services.
The work builds on the dynamic media facility (DMF) approach, using the Media eXchange Layer (MXL) to connect real-time components and the time-addressable media store (TAMS) for recording, replay, and editing. This is intended to keep the work portable and vendor-neutral.
The group is the live production strand of the EBU’s European Cloud Ecosystem for Public Service Media.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) says it is “deeply concerned” by the Irish government’s decision to cut agreed public funding for public broadcaster RTÉ by €20m.
