Healthleap, a clinical AI platform that screens patients for conditions that often go undiagnosed, today announced $38 million in combined seed and Series A funding from Sequoia Capital, First Round Capital, and Hummingbird Ventures. Healthleap reads each patient’s full record every morning and shows the care team who needs attention first. Patients who would have been missed get seen, and get seen earlier. The funding will help the company to expand to more conditions and grow its engineering, sales, customer success, and product teams.

The Problem: Millions of patients leave hospitals with undiagnosed conditions

Hospitals today are overwhelmed with understaffed clinical teams and manual screening processes. This creates a cycle of worse health outcomes and systemic financial loss. Consider malnutrition: Most hospitals still screen for it with two questions that a nurse asks once, at admission. Patients who are sedated, confused or too sick to answer are the ones most likely to be missed. Up to half of hospitalized patients are at risk, yet fewer than 9% are formally diagnosed, contributing to increased morbidity, mortality, length of hospital stay, and cost (ref 1,2). When malnutrition is diagnosed and treated, it leads to better health outcomes, and hospitals can claim ~$11,000 in reimbursement for each severe malnutrition diagnosis. One Penn Medicine hospital observed that Healthleap drove $23.8M a year from a combination of incremental reimbursement revenue and the financial impact of length-of-stay reductions.

“Every week, millions of patients leave hospitals with unresolved health conditions that will erode their health and cost up to 10x more to treat later,” explained Josiah Meyer, co-founder and CEO of Healthleap. “Finding them now is prevention, and it’s a win for everyone. Patients get treated before they get sicker. Hospitals shorten stays and are paid for the care they deliver. Payers avoid the much larger cost of complications down the road. Our goal is to improve care and save lives by catching these conditions early.”

How Healthleap helps hospitals

Starting with malnutrition, a condition that costs the US healthcare system up to $58B annually, Healthleap is the first and only validated AI malnutrition screening tool that delivers an EHR-integrated screening layer for hospitals. Created by clinicians for clinicians, it continuously analyzes every patient’s record, including notes, labs, vitals, orders, problem lists, and flags risk for conditions. Healthleap then pushes actionable risk scores into optimized EHR workflows to support clinicians in identifying, treating, and improving their patients’ health. Hospitals can screen every patient every day with higher precision. The result is shorter lengths of stay, improved patient outcomes, and increased hospital reimbursement. With demonstrated results in malnutrition, the company is rapidly expanding to other conditions, including congestive heart failure, pressure ulcers, various hospital-acquired infections, and more. Its platform is HIPAA-compliant and SOC 2-certified.

“Healthleap is focused on finding patients who are being missed and getting them the care they need,” said Alfred Lin, Partner at Sequoia Capital. “The impact for both patients and hospitals has been inspiring, with one hospital seeing 39% more malnutrition cases identified and treated, and $11 million in incremental revenue in a single health system.”

Josh Kopelman, co-founder and partner at First Round Capital, shared, “We were immediately drawn to Healthleap’s bold vision: imagine if every hospital could use real-time AI to spot overlooked clinical risk, improve patient care, and unlock meaningful reimbursement revenue. That’s exactly what Healthleap is delivering and more, starting with disease-related malnutrition and rapidly expanding across conditions to save lives and hospitals money.”

Healthleap was founded by sibling duo Josiah and Jemima Meyer, who teamed up after Jemima, as a clinician, started building tools to help herself and colleagues treat patients faster. They started Healthleap in 2022 to build proactive, preventive systems and safety nets for patients across the world. They aim to improve the health of as many people as possible.
