“Carrying On” - A Mystery Built on Reinvention, Resilience, and Unexpected Strength

Jonita Davis’s “Carrying On” follows Nadia, an educated single mother trying to rebuild her life after discovering her husband’s infidelity. With little support from her narrow-minded mother-in-law, Nadia is forced to move back home, closer to her father and a collection of complicated—and sometimes devious—family members. What is supposed to be a fresh start soon takes an unexpected turn into a murder mystery.

What I found so refreshing about this cleverly crafted book is its main character and the many layers Jonita Davis gives her. Nadia’s role is not limited to being a mother or a woman recovering from a broken marriage. She is intelligent, observant, and educated enough to become involved in unraveling a murder case that takes the reader through a series of entertaining twists and turns.

Davis has a gift for unfolding a story with such vivid detail that “Carrying On” often paints a cinematic portrait in the reader’s mind. I found myself imagining how naturally this story could translate to the big screen. At the same time, the characters and their possibilities leave enough avenues open for the story to move in many directions, creating the kind of hunger for more that could easily carry into a series.

With an unlikely hero, intriguing villains, family complications, and a mystery at its center, I found myself genuinely connected to Nadia’s trials and rooting for her as she navigated each new challenge.

This is not simply another “bored housewife” scenario. Nadia has intelligence, purpose, vulnerability, and strength of her own. By the end, the title seems particularly fitting.

“Carrying On” does just that—it keeps moving forward, and it makes the reader want to move forward with it.
