Fire Prevention Month in Puerto Rico Highlights Hidden Indoor Environmental Risks After Fires

Each October, Fire Prevention Month serves as a reminder that fire safety starts with prevention. While fires are often associated with visible destruction, even small incidents can create significant indoor environmental quality concerns that linger long after the flames are extinguished.

According to Zimmetry Environmental, Puerto Rico’s leading building science, indoor environmental quality (IEQ), and industrial hygiene consulting firm, fire damage frequently extends far beyond what can be seen. Smoke can travel throughout a building, leaving behind fine particles, soot, and persistent odors that penetrate building materials, furnishings, HVAC systems, and personal belongings. Acidic smoke residues can also corrode metals and damage electronics, glass, and other surfaces over time.

Modern fire risks also include the increasing use of lithium-ion batteries. Fires involving these batteries can burn at extremely high temperatures, reignite unexpectedly, and release toxic gases, heavy metals, and ultrafine particles that may spread throughout indoor environments.

Following a fire, occupants may be exposed to airborne particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), combustion byproducts such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and, in some cases, dioxins and furans produced when plastics and synthetic materials burn. Lingering smoke odors can further affect comfort and well-being.

Fire damage and restoration activities may also disturb lead-based paint, asbestos-containing materials, and other hazards already present in a building. In addition, water used to extinguish a fire can create conditions favorable for mold growth if affected materials are not dried and restored quickly.
