Airbnb expands Groceries with Instacart across US and Canada
Forget the car ride to the grocery store on your next trip—Airbnb’s got you covered.
Guests heading to destinations across the US can now order groceries, powered by Instacart, for their trip up to three weeks before check-in, directly in the Airbnb app, and receive $0 delivery fees on orders of $10 or more.1 No separate account or app download is needed, and the listing address is pre-populated, meaning guests can place an order without entering their reservation details. Canada will follow in the coming weeks. Guests in Phoenix, Arizona and Orlando, Florida can also arrive to groceries already waiting at their Airbnb listing, where hosts who opt in can offer to receive the order and stock the fridge and pantry before check-in.
Airbnb worked with Instacart to look at what guests order most across different locations, and the data tells a story about how people actually travel.
Head to a Gulf Coast beach town and sunscreen tops the list; guests in Madeira Beach, Florida order it about 4.5 times more than Airbnb guests nationwide. In the Smoky Mountains, it’s all about breakfast: sliced bacon is the most distinctive order, followed by pancake syrup in Gatlinburg. Nashville guests, meanwhile, order energy drinks at more than double the national rate—a little extra energy for a night out line dancing never hurts. And in Big Bear, California, a beloved destination for skiing and camping, it’s s’mores season year-round: graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate candies are distinct items in this area, because a mountain getaway calls for a sweet treat 2.
Here are some of the other cities that saw the biggest contrast in their shopping lists, compared to Airbnb guests using Instacart nationwide:
City Category Vs. US National Average3
Orlando area, FL Baby Food Purees +188%
Los Angeles, CA Oat Milk +214%
Miami, FL Bottled Yerba Mate +3,088%
Austin, TX Navel Oranges +272%
Groceries will be available to Airbnb guests in Canada in the coming weeks, and while this marks the first time Instacart is available through Airbnb for guests in Canada, the service is already a go-to for many Canadians, especially around the country’s biggest holidays. Easter brings a burst of spring shopping, with fresh cut tulips ordered 13 times more often than the Canadian yearly average. Ahead of Victoria Day—the unofficial start of summer for much of the country—it’s all about the garden: five times as much soil is ordered. And Canada Day brings out the national pride, with flag orders spiking more than 40 times 4.
“We wanted groceries to feel like a natural part of a stay, not another errand, so guests can have everything they need waiting for them when they arrive. By partnering with Instacart, we’re making that possible for guests across the U.S. and Canada,” said Juan David Borrero, Global Head of Partnerships & Business Development at Airbnb.
Grocery has been one of the most-requested services on Airbnb, and this expansion makes it available to the vast majority of stays across the US, with Canada and additional coverage continuing to grow over time.
“There’s nothing like arriving somewhere new and having it feel like home from day one,” said Ryan Hamburger, Chief Commercial Officer at Instacart. “That’s exactly what groceries powered by Instacart does for Airbnb guests—and now we’re bringing that experience to millions of travelers across the US, with Canada 5 coming soon, driving new demand for our retail partners and making it easier than ever for guests to get the groceries they need wherever they’re traveling.”
Groceries are now available to guests on eligible trips across the US, with Canada launching in the coming weeks.
