EPA Announces $27.4 Million to Reduce Lead in Drinking Water Across Puerto Rico

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced $27.4 million in funding to help protect Puerto Rico’s residents from lead exposure in drinking water. Distributed through the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF), the funding will support efforts to identify, remove, and replace lead service lines serving homes and communities across the islands.

According to the EPA, the investment will help accelerate projects to locate lead-containing pipes, develop replacement plans, and complete infrastructure upgrades that reduce the risk of lead contamination in drinking water systems. Lead is a potent neurotoxin that can cause serious health effects, especially in children, impacting learning, behavior, and development. Replacing lead service lines is expected to provide significant public health benefits and help ensure safer drinking water for generations to come.

While infrastructure improvements are an important part of reducing lead exposure, drinking water is only one potential source. Lead-based paint, contaminated dust, soil, industrial processes, and certain building materials can also contribute to harmful exposures in homes, schools, workplaces, and commercial facilities.
