Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is out now! Take on the apocalypse in an RPG epic
Disaster is about to befall the Dagdan Empire, but hope remains in such bleak times. Are you ready to defy fate?
The Fire Emblem™: Fortune’s Weave game—the latest entry in the classic tactical RPG series—is out now for the Nintendo Switch™ 2 system. This is an all-new adventure, so you can close those lore wikis you may or may not have open—this game has a lot to offer both players who are completely new to the series or longtime franchise vets.
Here’s what you need to know.
Welcome to Dagda
Enter the Dagdan Empire—a prosperous land ruled by the gods. Unfortunately, things take a bleak turn when the demon god Balor returns. In a last-ditch attempt to stop him, you are tasked to go back in time with the help of the goddess Fortuna (who has really cool hair, by the way). Your destination is the Heroic Games in the city of Dagsion—an elite competition for the best of the best.
Once there, you are to assemble an elite team of powerful heroes and guide them to a final fight for the fate of the world.
No pressure…
Four destinies, woven together
The Heroic Games are a pretty big deal for the Dagdan Empire. The winner is granted one wish, so competition is fierce.
Four warriors stand out above the rest, and you can play their individual storylines in any order you want (and can even pause progress in one to jump to another).
-
Cai: a young boy determined to win the games to save his imprisoned father.
-
Dietrich: a swordsman ever on the hunt for a stronger foe.
-
Theodora: a queen seeking to fulfill the long-held dream of her homeland.
-
Leda: a musician with her sights set on revenge.
The stories of these four heroes are key to this time-traveling saga of strength and steel.
A battle for the ages (literally)
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is a tactical RPG, which means you’ll command your units in strategic turn-based combat. Battles can range from small-scale skirmishes all the way to elaborate, massive battles with specific rules.
While fighting, you’ll come across familiar RPG aspects such as character classes, weapons, magic, armor, and special attacks. However, tactical RPGs also put a special emphasis on positioning. Where you place your units on the battlefield is very important—you’ll need to think about how far you are from an enemy, how far your attacks reach, effective unit matchups, and where your other units are.
Certain heroes can also unleash powerful signature moves called Blaze Arts at the cost of HP. Using these moves fill up the Blaze Gauge, which grants a helpful power boost at the halfway mark. But be mindful, because filling up the gauge completely leads to a Burst effect—ending any bonuses and cutting the hero’s max HP in half. It’s all about that risk and reward!
Oh, and don’t worry if you’re new to this kind of game or this sounds like a lot right now. The game gradually teaches you these mechanics, and there are also ways to make it less challenging. For instance, you can rewind your turns a limited number of times to try out different strategies.
Explore to your heart’s content
Between each big story event, how you choose to spend your time is up to you!
For example, you can visit numerous locations within the city to prep your team. Recruit allies around town, level up Blessings at temples, hone your skills at the training ground, build bonds of friendship at inns, and more.
Or you can leave the city’s walls to explore the world map. Venture out to complete quests, gather resources, and defeat roaming enemies for experience. You can even do a bit of dungeon crawling for better loot. It’s all up to you!
What will you discover?
Believe it or not, we’re just scratching the surface here—there is much more to uncover in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. Just know that there are plenty of twists and turns on the road to Balor, and we hope you enjoy the journey!
