Richard P. Benevento Advances Toward 2027 Full Ironman Follow-Up to “Journey to Blue Lake”

The Portland author continues documenting how confronting open-water fear led from a first triathlon to one of endurance sport’s toughest tests.

Benevento’s upcoming manuscript will explore that later stage in greater depth, including the physical demands and personal lessons that followed Blue Lake.

Richard P. Benevento now views Journey to Blue Lake as the first major chapter in a broader endurance story. After documenting the fears and personal losses that surrounded his first triathlon, Benevento is developing a follow-up account centered on the progression that ultimately led him to the full Ironman distance. He plans to complete that new book in 2027.

Benevento did not begin triathlon as an experienced swimmer seeking a podium. He began as a man trying to change the direction of his life. Losing his father to leukemia, going through a difficult divorce, and developing unhealthy drinking habits left him searching for a goal demanding commitment. Seeing a co-worker race in a triathlon gave him the spark. The broad mix of participants, spanning many ages, shapes, and ability levels, convinced him that he could put himself on the start line too.

The hardest barrier was the water. Training sessions sometimes triggered panic attacks, forcing Benevento to climb out of the pool, remove his goggles, and recover his breathing. Instead of abandoning the goal, he worked with coaches, practiced breathing and kicking drills, and gradually learned to manage the fear that had once controlled him.

That first finish in 2012 did not close the story. It became the beginning of a longer pursuit that reached a milestone with his first Ironman in 2018. Benevento’s upcoming manuscript will explore that later stage in greater depth, including the physical demands and personal lessons that followed Blue Lake.

Readers can order “Journey to Blue Lake” from Amazon or choose among other leading internet booksellers. For audio, the title is distributed by Kobo, Audible, Booktopia, Google Play, and Amazon.

By linking his first race to the full Ironman years that followed, Benevento is shaping a two-part record of what sustained effort can make possible.
