Light art and hydrogen come together at Lutakko square during the City of Light event

Cefmof will once again take part in the City of Light event in Jyväskylä. This year, Cefmof is enabling Evanescent, a light art installation by Australian art studio Atelier Sisu, to be presented at Lutakko square. The installation will be on display throughout the City of Light event and will be complemented by Cefmof’s Hydrogen, Light and Power programme from 25 to 27 September, offering visitors an opportunity to explore hydrogen production, storage and different ways of using hydrogen.

For three evenings, part of Evanescent will be illuminated using electricity produced from hydrogen. Visitors to Lutakko square can also explore the FC Tundra hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, a hydrogen oven and the Hydrogen Sauna Boat, as well as hydrogen production and storage.

Evanescent invites visitors to pause in the moment

Evanescent by Australian art studio Atelier Sisu is an immersive light and sound installation inspired by the fleeting and fragile nature of a bubble. The work was conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting on how things we take for granted as permanent can suddenly change or disappear. It invites visitors to pause in the moment and see the world around them from a new perspective.

Spreading across Lutakko square, the installation consists of spherical elements of different sizes. Twenty-five spheres approximately one metre in diameter will be placed in the water, three pairs of spheres resembling hydrogen molecules will be positioned on the steps, and three large modules will be installed on the square. During the day, the reflective surfaces of the elements respond to changing light, creating different colours and reflections. As evening falls, the lighting gives the installation a new appearance.

For three evenings, light will also be powered by hydrogen

From Friday to Sunday, 25–27 September, from 19:00 to 22:00, Lutakko square will demonstrate how hydrogen can be converted into electricity and electricity into light.

The FC Tundra hydrogen fuel cell vehicle on site will serve as a mobile power source. Hydrogen stored in the vehicle’s tanks is supplied to fuel cells, where its chemical energy is converted into electricity. Electricity from the vehicle will then be used to illuminate part of Evanescent, providing a tangible example of how hydrogen can be used as an energy source.

The FC Tundra and hydrogen-powered lighting are part of the three-day Hydrogen, Light and Power programme from 25 to 27 September. Evanescent itself will remain on display at Lutakko square throughout the City of Light event.

From hydrogen production to different applications

In addition to the light art, visitors to Lutakko square can learn about hydrogen production and storage and explore different ways of using hydrogen. The event demonstrates the journey of hydrogen from production and storage to a range of practical applications.

Also on display is the Hydrogen Sauna Boat, developed by Cefmof and Yamaha Motor. Visitors can view the boat from the quay. On the Hydrogen Sauna Boat, hydrogen is used both to generate electricity through a fuel cell system and directly as a heat source for the sauna and grill.

Hydrogen will also be used for cooking. In the hydrogen oven, heat generated by burning hydrogen is used to cook food, and visitors can enjoy complimentary sausages and corn prepared using hydrogen.
