UK support for TFFF boosts momentum to keep tropical forests standing

WWF welcomes the UK Government’s announcement to invest £400 million in the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF), an innovative financing mechanism designed to reward countries for protecting tropical forests and delivering climate, biodiversity and development benefits at scale.

The UK’s pledge underscores the essential role of tropical forests in supporting climate stability, economic resilience and biodiversity conservation.

This announcement builds on commitments already made by Brazil, Norway, Indonesia, France, Germany and others, adding further momentum behind a new model for long-term tropical forest finance.

Tanya Steele, CEO, WWF-UK, said: “We welcome the commitment made by the UK government today to tackle the global deforestation crisis. The rapid destruction of the world’s forests is fuelling climate change now, with consequences already being felt here in the UK and around the globe.

“By backing the Tropical Forest Forever Facility, the UK is helping to incentivise nations for keeping their forests standing. Today’s announcement is a vital step to protect the forests we rely on for food and climate stability, and which are home to extraordinary wildlife.”

Launched at the UN Climate COP30 in Belém, Brazil, the TFFF is designed to provide sustained incentives for countries that maintain forest cover and safeguard the global benefits this provides. Most importantly, at least 20% of payments are intended to reach Indigenous Peoples and local communities, who have long been among the most effective stewards of tropical forests.

This commitment reinforces a necessary shift in the way the world recognizes and finances tropical forest conservation: valuing those who protect these forests and ensuring long-term resources so that this protection can be effective. By placing Indigenous Peoples and local communities at the heart of this solution, the TFFF has the potential to transform conservation.”

The TFFF holds significant promise for advancing transformative change in tropical forest conservation. WWF calls on countries to join the cohort of sponsor countries and come forward with ambitious commitments in the TFFF. We also call on private investors to join this transformative initiative and stand ready to buy bonds when issued.
