Tyre compound selections for Baku, Sepang and Singapore
Pirelli informed the teams of the compound selections for the triple-header that will begin at the end of September with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and conclude in early October with the Singapore Grand Prix. For both Baku and the city-state event, which are street circuits, the softest trio in the range has been chosen: C3 as Hard, C4 as Medium and C5 as Soft.
For the Bahrain Grand Prix, which will be hosted at Sepang from 2 to 4 October, the intermediate range comprising C2, C3 and C4 will instead be used. The Malaysian circuit places medium levels of stress on the tyres relative to the scale encompassing all tracks on the championship calendar.
The asphalt in Kuala Lumpur is particularly abrasive and has not been resurfaced since the last Formula 1 race held there in 2017. The decision not to use the hardest compounds is aimed at reducing the lap time differential between a one-stop and a two-stop race, thereby encouraging a wider range of potential race strategies.
