Yayoi Kusama (1929-2026)

We are greatly saddened to hear the news of Yayoi Kusama’s death. One of the world’s best-known contemporary artists, Kusama’s pioneering work spanned an incredible seven decades, much of which reflected her utterly unique vision of the world. She was loved for her large-scale environmental installations that provoked wonder and contemplation.

Kusama was an immensely important artist to Tate. She was the subject of a major retrospective at Tate Modern in 2012, and more recently her Infinity Mirror Rooms became our most visited show of all time, welcoming almost a million visitors in three years. In her own words, these works ’opened up a world of fantasy and freedom’.
