ESPN Deportes’ SportsCenter will air a Mother’s Day special feature with Chicago Cubs Alfonso Soriano’s mother, Andrea Soriano. The special feature will be aired Sunday, May 13 during the 6:30 p.m. ET. edition of SportsCenter and will be re-aired the same day after the network’s exclusive Spanish-language telecast of Béisbol Dominical (Sunday Night Baseball) featuring Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins at 8 p.m. ET.

During the interview Andrea Soriano discusses the challenges of being a single parent in her native country, the Dominican Republic, and talks about her son’s dreams of making it in the major leagues.

In addition to the heart-warming interview with Andrea Soriano, Alfonso Soriano talks about Fundación Esperanza, a non-profit organization he founded in honor of his mother with the goal of providing needed services to single mothers from disadvantaged economic backgrounds in the Dominican Republic.

Excerpts from the interview:

Alfonso Soriano: “I owe everything to her. When Mother’s Day comes around she’s usually in Santo Domingo and the first things I do is grab the phone and call her to wish her a Happy Mother’s Day. She was my mother and my father, and that is something very special that I will always carry with me.”

Andrea Soriano: “Mother’s Day is one of the happiest days for me. One of the most amazing Mother’s Days for me was in Texas with Alfonso. He took me shopping and I asked him, ‘Alfonso, why are you buying me all these presents?’ and he replied, ‘Mommy, this doesn’t even get close to what you truly deserve for being such an incredible woman.’ Afterwards he took me to the game and gave me the biggest gift of the day – a home run. I was the happiest mother in the whole United States!”
