Chris Moneymaker Breaks Down His Televised WSOP Main Event Exit

Americas Cardroom Pro Chris Moneymaker has provided an exclusive breakdown of the hand that ended his 2026 World Series of Poker Main Event run on the money bubble.

The hand appeared during ESPN’s Main Event coverage and attracted attention because of the unusual board, the timing of the decision and the payout circumstances that followed.

The 2003 Main Event champion entered Day 4 with 221,000 chips, or approximately 27.6 big blinds. Seven more eliminations were needed before the remaining 1,382 players reached the money.

Rather than stop playing until the bubble ended, Moneymaker believed his stack gave him enough room to remain active and evaluate each situation on its own merits.

His opponent also played an important role. Moneymaker viewed Antonio Vargas as an aggressive player capable of using the bubble to pressure other players.

After Moneymaker opened from the hijack, Vargas three-bet. Moneymaker called because he believed Vargas could be raising with a wider range than a tighter opponent would use in the same situation.

The hand continued through bets on the flop and turn. The river completed a full house on the board, meaning several possible hands would use the five community cards and split the pot.

Vargas then moved all in.

Moneymaker was not deciding whether his own cards could beat a strong value hand. He was considering whether Vargas could be bluffing often enough with a hand that would also play the board.

Based on Vargas’ earlier activity, Moneymaker decided there were enough potential bluffs to call. He stressed that the decision was opponent-specific and would not automatically apply against a more conservative player.

Vargas revealed pocket aces and eliminated Moneymaker.

The elimination occurred during hand-for-hand play. Moneymaker was one of three players knocked out during the same sequence, even though only two $15,000 payouts were available.

The combined $30,000 was divided equally among the three players, giving each a $10,000 payout. That result was not known when Moneymaker faced the river bet.
