Essence Fest Recap: PRH Shines at 2026 ESSENCE Book Festival

WEBWIRE

Penguin Random House was proud to attend and sponsor the 2026 ESSENCE Festival of Culture Book Festival over the Fourth of July weekend in New Orleans.

The ESSENCE Festival of Culture welcomed nearly 500,000 attendees over the course of the weekend, and Penguin Random House showed up in a big way—with our authors, books, and immersive activation. Throughout the festival, our authors participated in panels, readings, and conversations on the ESSENCE Authors Stage, including:

  • America at 250: Redeem & Repair, featuring Damario Solomon-Simmons (Redeem a Nation) and Nikole Hannah-Jones (The 1619 Project)
  • “I’m So Happy You’re Here” (Library Joy) Reading with Mychal Threets
  • Fireside Chat with Tayari Jones on Kin
  • A Fireside Chat with Mara Brock Akil on The Revelation of Dionne Daphne
  • What It Takes to Beat the Odds, featuring Calvin Duncan (The Jailhouse Lawyer) and Albaner Eugene Jr. (Momentum)

This year, Nikole Hannah-Jones and Mara Brock Akil also co-curated the Book Festival programming on the ESSENCE Authors Stage, helping to anchor powerful conversations about Black authorship, storytelling, and legacy.

Consumer Marketing created “Women Who Wrote Culture,” an immersive literary museum experience celebrating the legacy, craft, and future of Black women’s storytelling—and the profound ways their work has shaped culture. We featured authors such as Toni Morrison, Angela Y. Davis, Michelle Obama, and Tayari Jones. The activation featured archival photographs and imagery, interactive audio experiences, and shareable spaces designed to encourage discovery and connection. Attendees also had the chance to participate in title and swag giveawaysand enjoy a photo booth sponsored by Meta and Threads.

This year, Community Book Center served as our bookselling partner. Founded in New Orleans in 1983 by Ms. Vera Warren-Williams, the store created the first book experience at ESSENCE Festival. This year’s event marked Ms. Vera’s return to the Book Festival after 14 years. Building on last year’s momentum, we saw strong sales across a wide range of titles, driven by author appearances, pop culture moments, and enduring classics.

Our continued sponsorship of the ESSENCE Festival of Culture has strengthened our connection with readers and offered valuable insight into how Penguin Random House can show up with even greater intention in the future. The energy throughout the weekend underscored the tremendous enthusiasm for books by and about Black communities, as well as for spaces that celebrate Black storytelling and its lasting influence on culture. We left New Orleans inspired to build on this momentum and deepen our investment in the readers, writers, and partners who make this celebration possible.

Thank you to all the colleagues who worked the event and helped bring every element together. We are also deeply grateful to Storehouse Voices leaders Tamira Chapman and Porscha Burke for their continued commitment to this space, their dedication to this audience, and their partnership in making the weekend a success.
