Dr. Coach Irwin Hudson Challenges Parents, Coaches, and Educators to “See Clearly” in Powerful New Book on Youth Sports Culture
“Take Off Your Parent-Colored Glasses” explores the hidden emotional pressures parents unknowingly place on young athletes—and why it may be harming the very children they hope to help.
What if the biggest obstacle in youth sports is not the coach, the referee, or the athlete—but the parent?
In “Take Off Your Parent-Colored Glasses: Unveiling the Detrimental Impacts Parents Have On Sports,” veteran coach and youth mentor Dr. Coach Irwin Hudson delivers a bold and deeply personal examination of how parental pressure, emotional involvement, and distorted expectations can unintentionally damage young athletes, strain families, and reshape the culture of youth sports itself.
Drawing from more than 30 years of experience coaching, mentoring, and raising competitive athletes, Dr. Hudson introduces the concept of “Parent-Colored Glasses” (PCGs)—the emotional lens through which many parents unknowingly distort reality when it comes to their children’s athletic journeys.
Part memoir, part coaching guide, and part wake-up call, the book confronts difficult but necessary conversations surrounding youth development, identity, emotional intelligence, sports culture, and parenting accountability.
For decades, Dr. Hudson has worked directly with athletes, parents, and coaches across multiple levels of competitive basketball, witnessing firsthand the emotional dynamics that shape youth sports culture and athlete development.
Through real-life stories from youth, AAU, high school, and college athletics, Dr. Hudson reveals:
- How even loving, supportive parents can unintentionally sabotage athletic growth
- The psychological impact of pressure, overprotection, and unrealistic expectations on student-athletes
- Why entitlement and emotional involvement can damage team chemistry and coaching relationships
- The hidden emotional burden many young athletes carry in silence
- Practical strategies for parents and coaches to restore balance, communication, and trust
At the center of the book is the life-changing moment when Dr. Hudson himself was confronted with the words: “Take Off Your Parent-Colored Glasses.”
That moment became the foundation for a larger mission—one that now extends far beyond basketball courts and sidelines.
“This book is not about blaming parents,” says Dr. Hudson. “It’s about creating awareness. Parents love their children deeply, but sometimes love mixed with fear, pressure, or expectation can cloud perspective. My goal is to help families protect what matters most, the child’s identity, confidence, growth, and love for the game.”
As conversations surrounding athlete mental health, parental pressure, youth burnout, and emotional wellness continue to become increasingly important conversations, “Take Off Your Parent-Colored Glasses” arrives at a pivotal moment for families, educators, and sports communities alike.
The book speaks not only to sports parents and coaches, but also to educators, mentors, counselors, youth leaders, and organizations committed to healthy child development and emotional wellness.
Beyond the book itself, Dr. Hudson is actively developing speaking engagements and TEDx-focused presentations centered on the “Parent-Colored Glasses” concept, with the goal of expanding this conversation nationally through schools, athletic organizations, conferences, podcasts, and major media platforms.
With its emotionally honest storytelling and practical insight, “Take Off Your Parent-Colored Glasses” positions Dr. Coach Irwin Hudson as a compelling new voice in the national conversation surrounding youth sports culture and parental influence.
It’s time to protect young athletes.
It’s time to challenge the culture.
It’s time to see clearly.

About the Author
Dr. Irwin L. Hudson, also known as DrCoach, was born and raised in Starkville, Mississippi. After serious knee injuries ended his dreams of pursuing collegiate and professional basketball, he redirected his passion toward mentoring and developing young athletes.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering with a minor in Mathematics from Mississippi State University in 1991 before relocating to Orlando, Florida, where he reconnected with basketball through coaching and athletic development programs.
In 1995, Dr. Hudson founded OrlandoHoops, Inc., which became one of Florida’s premier basketball training organizations. Since beginning his AAU and high school coaching career in 1997, he has worked with numerous athletes, families, and schools throughout the Orlando area.
As both a coach and a parent, Dr. Hudson has experienced firsthand the emotional complexities that shape youth sports culture. Those experiences inspired him to write “Take Off Your Parent-Colored Glasses” and begin a larger mission focused on awareness, accountability, and protecting the emotional well-being of young athletes.
