  • EIB backs construction of 190 MW wind farm in western Poland, able to power some 200,000 households.
  • Power utility TAURON plans to put the wind farm into operation in 2027.
  • New financing highlights EIB’s prominent role advancing Poland’s energy transition, contributing to Europe’s climate goals and economic competitiveness.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed today new financing worth over €260 million (PLN 1.12 billion) to power utility TAURON for the construction of what will become Poland’s second-largest onshore wind farm. Once completed next year, the 190 MW power plant in Western Poland will provide clean energy sufficient to supply nearly 200,000 households. The project showcases the EU development bank’s prominent role in advancing the country’s energy transition and contributing to the bloc’s intertwined goals of advancing climate action, powering economic competitiveness and spurring strategic autonomy at the same time.

Comprising more than 50 turbines, each measuring over 130 metres and capable of generating 3.6 MW of clean electricity, the construction of the Miejska Górka wind farm is well-advanced. Developed by Poland’s second-largest energy group TAURON, it relies mainly on European sub-contractors. It will contribute to the company’s energy transition goals, support employment and regional development, as well as increasing the share of renewables in Poland’s energy mix.

“From ensuring clean energy supplies for our homes to strengthening competitiveness of our industries, ambitious renewables projects answer multiple existential challenges faced by Europe,” said EIB Vice-President Marko Primorac, who is responsible for the bank’s activity in Poland. “This favourable financing for a new wind farm is a perfect example of the EIB’s strategic role in powering Europe through supporting ambitious partners like TAURON.”

The EIB is providing over half of the project’s total cost, the long-term financing highlighting the bank’s consistent commitment to energy transition and climate action. The investment is TAURON’s largest onshore wind farm to date, an important milestone towards achieving the company’s 2040 climate neutrality target. This is the EIB’s ninth financial agreement with TAURON, with previous ones covering power grids and hybrid bonds, among others.

“The EIB financing offers significant support for the TAURON Group’s energy transition, confirming the trust financial institutions put in our strategic investment projects. Favorable parameters, including attractive interest rates and an 18-year-long tenure, are particularly important to us. The EIB is a long-term financial partner of the TAURON Group and this agreement is the second-largest loan signed between the parties following PLN 2.8 billion agreement concluded in in 2021. This confirms cooperation and commitment on both sides to implement investments supporting the development of renewable energy sources and modern distribution infrastructure,” said Krzysztof Surma, Vice President of the Management Board for Finance of TAURON Polska Energia.

The EIB has long been a reliable partner of energy transition in Poland, providing favourable financing for the development of renewable sources and power grids, storage and energy efficiency initiatives, as well as low-emission transport. In particular, the EIB is the largest financier behind Poland’s offshore power boom.

More broadly, the EIB Group dedicated nearly two-thirds of its total new financing to green projects in 2025, consolidating its role as the EU’s climate bank. The Group finances around half of Europe’s energy grid investment and supports one in five solar plants, one in three onshore wind projects and most offshore wind farms.
