Remembering Fritz Vollmar, WWF’s first Director General

Fritz joined WWF in 1962 as our first Secretary General and played a central role in establishing WWF’s international headquarters and secretariat, building the first network of national organizations, and developing the international conservation programme that would become the foundation of our work around the world.

Over the years that followed, Fritz helped guide WWF through a remarkable period of growth. By the time he retired as Director General in 1978, WWF had expanded from its original founding members into a truly international organization, with national organizations in 26 countries and conservation projects supporting nature across more than 100 countries worldwide. His vision, determination and leadership were instrumental in transforming WWF into one of the world’s leading conservation organizations.

Fritz was later named a WWF Member of Honour in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the development of WWF and the global conservation movement. The legacy he helped create continues to live on through the work carried out every day by WWF offices, partners and supporters around the world.

Beyond his many achievements, Fritz was deeply respected and admired by colleagues across the WWF Network. He remained closely connected to WWF throughout his life, sharing his knowledge, experience and passion for conservation with generations of staff and leaders. His contribution to WWF and the global conservation movement will be remembered with deep gratitude, respect and admiration.
