Depop makes selling free in Australia, helping people earn more from fashion resale

WEBWIRE

Depop will evolve its fee structure in Australia from 22 July, removing selling fees for all sellers based in Australia* to help them keep more money from every sale they make on the platform.

The change reflects Depop’s continued investment in Australia, one of its fastest-growing markets globally, and is designed to make fashion resale more accessible for the growing community of people buying and selling secondhand.

Depop sellers in Australia who complete at least one sale generate an average of A$502 in sales in their first year on the platform*, highlighting the role resale is playing in helping people unlock value from items they no longer wear. Since launching in 2011, more than A$10.5 billion has been transacted on Depop globally*, as people turn to secondhand fashion to earn extra income, fund a future purchase, discover unique pieces, and extend the life of clothes already in circulation.

Peter Semple, CEO, Depop said: “The growth of Depop’s Australian community has been remarkable, and so much of that is down to the sellers and buyers who have helped build the platform into what it is today. Every item on our platform starts with someone who chooses to list it, style it, photograph it, and ship it. Removing selling fees means more of every sale stays with the people who earned it and we hope it will encourage more people to take their first step into selling secondhand. We want selling on Depop in Australia to be as rewarding as possible, and this is one of a number of investments to make that happen.”

The move broadly aligns Australia with Depop’s fee structure in the UK and US, where removing selling fees saw a 30–45% increase in listings*, giving buyers access to a wider selection of secondhand fashion.

The removal of selling fees is part of a wider update to Depop’s fee structure, which also includes the introduction of a marketplace fee for buyers in Australia from 22nd July onwards. The marketplace fee allows Depop to continually invest in the platform — funding 24/7 customer support and keeping every transaction safe and secure for the whole Depop community of buyers and sellers.

Together, these changes mean sellers keep more from every sale, while buyers can continue to transact on a platform built around safety and trust. More sellers listing on Depop means more inventory, greater variety and more choices across a wider range of price points for the community.

Depop is committed to delivering the best resale experience in Australia and further improvements, including a dedicated shipping solution for buyers and sellers, is planned in the months ahead.
