Sasha Quinton, President, Scholastic Children’s Book Group, was recently featured in Amherst Magazine’s The Women of Amherst from A to Z as the institution celebrates 50 years of coeducation.

Quinton, who graduated from Amherst in 2001, spoke about her time at Amherst, her early love for reading, and her work at Scholastic, particularly the company’s commitment to increasing access to books for all children.

“Sometimes I read a book,” Quinton said, “and there’ll be a passage in there with a thought that I’ve had a thousand times and didn’t think anybody has ever thought of before, and it’s, like, right there on the page, and you feel less alone …. I understand that our link in the chain is to ignite that love of reading, that spark.”

Quinton additionally shared that the thing she considers most valuable about Scholastic is that it empowers kids to pick books for themselves.

“Once a child finds a book that’s just right for them, they’re going to stay up all night under the covers with a flashlight,” Quinton said.
